[How to remove blue and yellow shield from an icon in Windows 11/10](^2^)

I closed UAC to see if overlays go away or not. Now it's open. But maybe there is a way to remove them without closing the UAC like removing shortcut arrows in this question: Remove shortcut icon overlay from shortcuts on Windows 7

How To Remove Blue And Yellow Shield From An Icon In Windows 10

There is another way - create a transparent icon, run TuneUp Utilities and replace the User Account icon with the transparent one, that solves the problem and the shield icon remains in the context menu, but doesn't ruin your icons anymore. TuneUp can also remove the shortcut arrows with just one click and replace basically any icon.

I was able to remove the blue & yellow UAC shield icon from in front of one of my desktop icons by right clicking on the icon, scrolling down, selecting properties, selecting shortcut, then change icon, then you should see your original icon in that window, double click the icon and hit OK. Now it should return back to the original Desktop icon without the UAC icon in front. I hope this has helped...

As you might have observed, some programs create desktop shortcuts with a shield icon on them. As you can see in the picture below, the yellow and blue shield icon shows up on the lower right area of some program shortcuts.

The yellow and blue shield icon indicates that the program will always require administrator rights to run. In other words, it will always run as administrator. When you double-click on a program shortcut which has the shield icon on it, you will get the User Account Control screen (unless you have disabled the UAC) where you need to click the Yes button to run the program with admin rights.

If you are one of those users who keep program shortcuts on the desktop, you might want to get rid of the yellow and blue shield to give all program icons a uniform look. Luckily, with a little bit of effort, you can remove the shield icon from the desktop shortcuts without hampering their functionality.

The shield icon is located in the file C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll (at least, in my copy of English 32-bit Windows 7). There are several versions of the shield icon there, including the blue and yellow version you have above (icon 78).

Shortcuts in Windows have an arrow overlaid on top of the icon to indicate that they are links. If you find the default Windows 10 shortcut icon too large, or you wish to change the shortcut arrow from the default blue arrow overlay to a smaller one, then you can do that easily. You can even disable the shortcut arrow completely. In this article, we will see how it can be done. There are two ways available to do this.

Step 3: Click on To apply button. If the Access Denied dialog box appears, click To follow button. You close the dialog. That's all! The program's desktop shortcut will no longer display the blue and yellow shield icon, but will still display the UAC screen by double clicking on it. You may notice a small (irrelevant) delay when you start the program now.

3. On the left side of the Programs and Features window, you should see a link with a blue and yellow shield next to it that says Turn Windows features on or off. Click this link to open the Windows Features window.

If you see a small blue and yellow shield icon and the text "Change settings that are currently unavailable", click the text. You may need to enter your password or your PC administrator's password to do this. Now scroll down to the Shut-down settings list. Untick "Turn on fast start-up" and click Save changes. When you next switch on your PC you should immediately see a significant boot time cut. With our Acer laptop, the boot time dropped by 80 seconds. Most interestingly, switching Fast startup back on made no difference; it would appear that the simple action of turning fast start-up off and on again is enough to get Windows 10 out of its slow booting state, in this case at least.

( If you do not see this option in your start menu, please check in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Click the small arrow pointing up, to make more icons become visible. If you do not see the small blue shield icon with an S on it, your computer has already been migrated to Microsoft Defender and there are no further steps to take. If you do see this icon, please contact TechServices for further instructions)

The blue and yellow shield that shows on that icon is the UAC shield that is being placed on a desktop icon if the program requires permission from the user to run for the accounts protection. This is to prevent other users in accessing the program using their account. This cannot be removed by default.

If you suddenly see a system icon or an application icon that has a blue and yellow shield or icon overlay at the corner, this indicates that the application has to run with admin privileges and each time you run these kinds of applications, a UAC or User Account Control prompt will appear to confirm if you really want to run the application.

If you create a new Desktop Icon, that would have had the yellow/blue shield, it will now also have a black square instead of the yellow/blue shield. This requires you to rebuild the Icon Cache again to fix it.
