The History and Highlights of Roland Garros 2005

On the men's side, Rafael Nadal, seeded fourth at his first French Open,[1] was a strong favorite to win the singles title after winning the Monte Carlo and Rome Masters. Guillermo Coria, the defending finalist and 2005 runner-up to Nadal in both Monaco and Rome, called Nadal the best clay-court player in the world prior to the tournament. After defeating top seed Roger Federer in the semifinals, Nadal defeated Mariano Puerta to claim his first French Open title, and the first of four won consecutively from 2005 until 2008. Nadal would go on to win the tournament a record 14 times.[2]

In the women's draw, Justine Henin-Hardenne won her second French Open title, defeating 2000 champion Mary Pierce in the final in just 62 minutes.[3] 2005 marked the first of three consecutive years in which Henin would win the women's singles title.

An official videogame for the tournament, Roland Garros 2005: Powered by Smash Court Tennis, was launched exclusively for the PlayStation 2 platform. The game, which is an updated version of Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament 2, featured 15 licensed players and 4 official courts of the tournament: Court Philippe Chatrier, Court Suzanne Lenglen, Court 1 and Court 2.[8]

Nadal would tick through that 2005 draw with efficiency. After beating Burgsmuller, he took out 46th-ranked Xavier Malisse in straight sets, then fellow teenager Richard Gasquet in three. He got by veteran Sebastien Grosjean in four sets and compatriot David Ferrer in the quarters.

Long hair with a bandanna to keep them out of his eyes, wearing capri pants and green sleeveless t-shirts, Nadal made his first appearance at Roland Garros in 2005, two years later than he was originally supposed to. A right elbow injury in 2003 had shifted his Grand Slam debut from the clay court in Paris to Wimbledon where he reached the third round. He went on to play the US Open that year and Australian Open in 2004. However, a stress fracture made him miss not just Roland Garros but most of the clay court season that year.

0: The number of times Nadal has lost in a French Open final. He won his first title in 2005, two days after turning 19, and he has failed to win the tournament just four times since, losing in the fourth round in 2009, the quarterfinals in 2015 and the semifinals in 2021 and withdrawing before the third round in 2016.

Nadal made his Roland Garros debut in 2005 and he has since dominated the event, with Sunday's 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 win over Ruud seeing him claim his 14th title and also extend his record number of Grand Slam men's singles titles to 22.

Competing at Roland Garros 17 times, Rafael Nadal claimed 13 titles and suffered only three losses, the most recent to Novak Djokovic in June. Rafa made a debut in Paris in 2005, his breakthrough season that made him the second-strongest link on the Tour.

2ff7e9595c
